    What are the various types of flow meters technologies?

    The accurate measure of flow is critical in any industrial process. It is being used in various application in industry and can measure flow rate depends upon flow technology used. Each flow meter calibration technology has some limitation, as no flow meter is universally suitable for every application.

    There are five different types of flow measuring technologies:-

    Differential Pressure Flow Meters

    Differential pressure flow meters, also known as DP flow meters, they rely on Bernoulli’s equation to measure the flow of fluid through a pipe. Constriction in the flow tube causes the velocity of the flowing fluid to change. Pressure drop increases as the flow increases.

    When fluid flows due to obstruction in flow path it creates a difference in upstream and downstream pressure. The difference in inlet and outlet pressure is sensed by the differential pressure transmitter.

    Differential pressure flow meters used to measure the flow of liquid, gas and steam. Due to engineering restriction a single flow meter meant to configure to measure both liquid and gas phases. They are being used in industries such as Oil and gas, power, chemical, pharmaceutical, wastewater, mining, metals, paper and pulp, HVAC, and food industries.

    What is a Positive Displacement Flow Meters?

    Positive Displacement Flowmeters, also known as PD flow meters.  They are best suitable for liquid flow measurement and can obtain high accurate metering over the long course of operation. It is often used for viscous liquid flow measurements and for custody transfer. They are also termed as mechanical flow meters. PD flow meter consists of a chamber which restricts the flow.

    A rotating or reciprocating mechanical device measure the fluid volume, deliver it fast and refill it again. They have the ability to handle a wide range of fluid viscosity with good levels of durability and repeatability. They do not require any flow conditioning. They appropriate for flow measurement of diesel, petrol, edible oil, de-ionized water, DM water. This measuring technology is available in a wide variety of configurations and options including digital displays, mechanical counters, and battery-powered models.

    Velocity Flow Meters

    The flow rate is proportional to the velocity of the fluid in the velocity flow meter. These types of flow meters seek a linear relationship to linear flow rates. No square-root relationship exists in velocity flow instruments. This flow measurement technology has a better range compared to other flow technologies. The linear relationship between velocity and flow rate allows them to measure flow over a wide range.

    Mass Flow Meters

    They are also referring as an inertial flow meter. This flow measuring device measures the mass flow rate of a fluid flowing through a pipe or tube. It measures the flow rate of fluid according to mass per unit time. Mass flow rate is dependent on the fluid density. It is easy to calculate the mass flow rate of fluid if the density is constant. If the density fluid varies, then the relationship is not simple. The density of the fluid may change on temperature, pressure, or composition.

    What is Open Channel Flow Meters

    Open channel flow meter measures the flow of liquids that are open to atmosphere at flow measurement path. Rivers, canals, streams and irrigation ditches are few example of open channel flow. To achieve accurate flow measurement both Level measurement and velocity measurement are must. Open channels are natural or man-made structures through which liquid flows with a free surface. Flumes, weirs and v-notches are being used to measure the flow liquids. These are dam-like arrangements which enable a limited or free-flow of fluids, based on the size and shape of the structure.
