Natural Gas Flow Meter Measurement

Natural gas flow meter

This natural gas meter for industry incorporates the flameproof thermal mass flow measurement technique, which has been certified by PESO, for measuring the direct usage of natural gas in supply systems with piped or pressurized delivery. As there are no moving components in this time-tested unit, it is able to provide accurate measurements without any pressure losses and does not require external compensation.

Overview

The thermal dispersion principle of this highly precise natural gas flow meter enables direct measurement of true gas mass flow rate without any need for separate measurements of temperature or pressure.

The unit is configured in a flameproof and PESO-certified enclosure which uses a platinum winding sensor inside 316 SS (stainless steel).

Unlike other natural gas flow metering designs available in the market today, this unique design has no moving parts and therefore results in minimal pressure loss and reduced maintenance requirements.

It is designed to work efficiently in both Piped Natural Gas as well as high-pressure cng gas flow meter configurations.

Working Principle

Gas Injection & Stream Straightening

The fuel stream enters the meter housing directly from the distribution pipeline. To ensure accurate measurement, an internal conditioning element stabilizes the gas, eliminating erratic swirls and velocity spikes before the stream enters the active sensing chamber.

Kinetic Turbine Rotation

As the gas moves forward, it strikes an aerodynamically angled rotor suspended in the flow path. The kinetic force of the moving gas turns the rotor, making it function as an efficient natural gas turbine meter. The rotor’s spinning speed changes in direct linear proportion to the volumetric flow velocity.

Non-Contact Pulse Generation

A pickup sensor mounted on the solid outer pressure wall tracks every revolution without contacting the gas. As the metallic blade tips pass beneath the sensor, they disrupt a magnetic field to generate precise electrical pulses, completely eliminating mechanical friction and pressure boundaries.

Smart Pressure & Temperature Compensation Because natural gas expands or contracts under varying line conditions, integrated sensors track real-time temperature and pressure. The electronic transmitter uses these live readings to adjust raw pulse counts, converting uncompensated volume into standardized mass or volume units.

Telemetry Transmission & Automation The internal microcircuit displays the corrected values on a digital screen and broadcasts standard 4–20mA or RS485 Modbus signals. This output integrates directly with your plant’s PLC or SCADA system, serving as a reliable natural gas flow meter for automated fuel management and billing.
