What Is a Flow Meter?

A flow meter is a device used to measure the instantaneous flow rate or quantity of a gas or liquid passing through a pipeline. Flow meters are also known as flow gauges, flow indicators, liquid meters, and other industry-specific names.

While terminology varies by industry, the core function remains the same. Digital flow meters can log data and transmit measurements to a flow controller, PLC, or SCADA system. They can also help control ongoing flow in pipes, while a batcher feature makes it easier to deliver a set quantity into a process.

Why Do I Need a Precision Flowmeter?

The amount of fluid passing through a custody-transfer process can be substantial. With the value of oil and gas, expensive chemicals, pharmaceutical ingredients, and industrial fuel, even a small measurement error may have a significant economic effect. Selecting an accurate, dependable flowmeter is therefore critical.

Measurement Principles

Flow Meter Technologies

Accurate flow measurement is critical in industrial processes. Each technology has strengths and limitations, and no single flow meter is universally suitable for every application.

Differential pressure flow metersTechnology 01

Differential Pressure Flow Meters

Differential pressure flow meters, also known as DP flow meters, rely on Bernoulli’s equation to measure the flow of fluid through a pipe. A constriction in the flow tube changes the velocity of the flowing fluid, and the pressure drop increases as the flow increases.

When fluid encounters an obstruction in its flow path, it creates a difference between upstream and downstream pressure. This difference in inlet and outlet pressure is sensed by a differential pressure transmitter.

Differential pressure flow meters are used to measure liquid, gas, and steam. They serve industries including oil and gas, power, chemical, pharmaceutical, wastewater, mining, metals, paper and pulp, HVAC, and food processing.

Types of Differential Pressure Flowmeters

  • Orifice Flowmeter
  • Venturi Flowmeter
  • Nozzle Flowmeter
  • Pitot-static Tube Flowmeter
  • Elbow Flowmeter
  • Wedge Flowmeter
  • V-Cone Flowmeter
  • Spring-Loaded Variable Aperture Flowmeter
  • Laminar Flowmeter
Positive displacement flow metersTechnology 02

What Is a Positive Displacement Flow Meter?

Positive displacement flowmeters, also known as PD flow meters, are well suited to liquid flow measurement and can provide highly accurate metering over long periods of operation. They are often used for viscous liquids and custody transfer, and are also described as mechanical flow meters.

A rotating or reciprocating mechanical device measures the fluid volume, delivers it, and refills the chamber. These meters handle a wide range of fluid viscosity with good durability and repeatability and do not require flow conditioning. Typical fluids include diesel, petrol, edible oil, de-ionized water, and DM water. Configurations include digital displays, mechanical counters, and battery-powered models.

Types of Positive Displacement Flow Meters

  • Oval Gear Flow Meter
  • Nutating Disc Flow Meter
  • Roots Flow Meter
  • Multi-Piston Flow Meter
  • Bi-Rotor Flow Meter
Velocity flow metersTechnology 03

Velocity Flow Meters

In a velocity flow meter, flow rate is proportional to the velocity of the fluid. These instruments seek a linear relationship to linear flow rates, with no square-root relationship. This technology offers a strong measuring range compared with many other flow technologies, allowing measurement across a wide span of flow.

5 Types of Velocity Flow Meters

  • Turbine Flow Meter
  • Electromagnetic Flow Meter
  • Vortex Flow Meter
  • Swirl Flow Meter
  • Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Mass flow metersTechnology 04

Mass Flow Meters

Also referred to as inertial flow meters, these devices measure the mass flow rate of a fluid passing through a pipe or tube. Mass flow is measured as mass per unit time and depends on fluid density. When density is constant the calculation is straightforward; when it varies, changes in temperature, pressure, or composition must be considered.

Types of Mass Flow Meters

  • Coriolis Mass Meter
  • Thermal Dispersion Mass Flow Meter
  • Compressed Air Flow Meter
  • Biogas Flow Meter
  • Natural Gas Flow Meter
  • LPG Gas Flow Meter
Open channel flow metersTechnology 05

What Are Open Channel Flow Meters?

Open channel flow meters measure liquids that are open to the atmosphere at the measurement point. Rivers, canals, streams, and irrigation ditches are common examples. Accurate measurement requires both level and velocity measurement. Flumes, weirs, and V-notches are used to measure these flows by enabling a limited or free flow of liquid according to the size and shape of the structure.

Common Methods Used to Measure Open Channel Flow

  • Timed Gravimetric
  • Tracer-Dilution
  • Area-Velocity
  • Manning’s Equation / Gauckler-Manning-Strickler Formula
  • Hydraulic Structures
