top mounted level switch

Top Mounted Level Switch

Our tough top mounted level switch is a reliable, gland-less method of automating the liquid level monitoring of deep sumps and tanks. With fully sealed inner parts that keep the electrical parts away from corrosive substances, our flexible device works excellently as a multi point top mounted float switch. It ensures safe operation of alarms, pumps, and fuel lines without any external source of energy.

Overview

The Top Mounted Level Switch is mounted vertically on the top flange of the tank/vessel used to sense liquid level in predetermined points. The sensor uses the principle of float, which runs up and down with the change in liquid level.

Inside the guide stem, there are magnetically operated reed switches that respond to the float location for providing signals about the level.

This system has the capacity of setting several switching points in one guide stem, which makes it applicable to many areas such as sump control, pumps operation, etc.

Some of its applications include diesel tanks, water tanks, and underground vessels.

Working Principle

Vertical Installation

The Top Mounted Level Switch is mounted at the top of the tank or vessel. The guide rod is immersed in the liquid whereas the electrical components are enclosed.

Float Action

A number of magnetic floats rise and fall in accordance with the rise and fall of the liquid level inside the vessel. SS316 material can be chosen where corrosive liquids are being handled.

Magnetic Action

Each magnetic float carries an embedded magnet. When the floats pass over the set points during their journey, they produce magnetic flux which energizes the reed switches in the guide rod.

Contact Operation

The change in state of the reed switch occurs when the floats reach the required level in the absence of any mechanical contacts.

Control Application

The level switching signal may be utilized to control pumps, valves, alarms and other automatic devices for high level, low level and multi-point level control applications.

Available Options

Float & Sensor Core Configurations

  • Single Float Setup: Base architecture featuring a single magnetic assembly moving freely along the guide tube between integrated stoppers.
  • Double Float Setup: Multi-float configuration optimized to track independent liquid height thresholds along the vertical guide stem.
  • Hermetically Sealed Reed Array: Internal sensing core utilizing completely isolated reed elements actuated via external permanent magnetic fields without breaking physical process boundaries.

Material of Construction (MOC)

  • Stainless Steel Alloys: High-purity SS304, SS304L, SS316, or SS316L metallurgy for robust chemical compatibility.
  • Corrosive-Resistant Plastic: Pure Polypropylene (PP) variants designed for highly aggressive or acidic process media.

Operational & Process Limits

  • Maximum Operational Ranges: Vertical guide stem heights configurable up to a maximum span of 3000 mm.
  • Maximum Design Pressure: Reinforced mechanical construction rated to withstand positive operating loads up to 7 Kg/cm².
  • Design Temperature Envelope: System elements calibrated to perform across standard process conditions up to 60°C.

Process Connections

  • Threaded Ports: Male or Female threaded connection interfaces available in standard BSP or NPT sizes.
  • Flanged Ends: Heavy-duty vertical mating flanges manufactured to comply directly with international ASA, BS, or JIS dimensional standards.

Switch Signals, Enclosures & Integration

  • Electrical Contact Form: Hermetically sealed reed switch module providing 1 NO + 1 NC potential-free circuits.
  • Contact Load Rating: Base electrical rating of 0.5 Amp at 230 VAC (designed for direct interfacing with external coupling relays for higher amperage requirements).
  • Weatherproof Casing: Outdoor-rated IP65 weather-proof protective housing.
  • Flameproof Casing: Specialized certified explosion-proof enclosure for severe hazardous areas.
  • Automation Upgrades: Available bundled with a dedicated external controller relay unit or pre-assembled within a bypass external cage assembly.

Why Top Mounted Level Switch

Top-Mounting Type Installation: The Top Mounted Level Switch can be mounted at the top of the tank, making it ideal for installations that require side mounting not to be feasible.

Multi-Switching Capabilities: A number of switches can be placed in one guide rod, thus enabling one device to detect the high, low, and/or intermediate levels of liquid in the vessel.

Rugged Design: The SS316 construction makes it suitable for use with water, chemicals, slurries, and other process fluids.

Use in Hazardous Environments: Flameproof types are available for handling flammable fluids.
